Additional Unit Information:
Martha's Vineyard Hospital has a wide seasonal variation in ED census, winter months see 30-35 patients per day while July and August range 80-90 patients per day. In the Summer and shoulder season staffing is augmented to accomodate this volume change. A Fast Track is offered 10am - 10 pm mid June through mid September and is staffed with a PA and RN. The RN staff is augmented with additional RNs and unlicensed assistive personnel during the same time frame as is administrative support in ED registration which includes a patient greeter. Behavioral health counselors are on call 24/7. Interpreter services for the Brazilian community are available 24/7 on an on call basis, the AT & T interpreter services are used for other languages. Secretarial support is scheduled from 6 am to 2 am daily. 1:1 observation is accomodated by floating personnel or calling in additional staff.
 
 
There are many variables to consider in establishing safe, efficiently staffed hospital units. Patient care units differ based upon the types of patients cared for on a given unit, and the way in which care is organized and delivered there. Education and experience levels of unit staff, support from nurse educators and nurse managers also factor into unit staffing decisions, as does the unique characteristics and mission of each hospital.
