Additional Unit Information:
The intensive care unit provides nursing care to critically ill patients. Care delivered in the ICU is prescribed by either the admitting diagnosis or by the specific interventions employed to meet the patient's needs. The unit and the staff are able to deliver highly complex care including hemodynamic monitoring, vasoactive and antiarrhythmic drug therapy and ventilator care. The physical, social and spiritual welfare of the patient, family and/or significant other is integrated into the plan of care. The ICU at Melrose/Wakefield Hospital is proud to enhance patient care using e-ICU technology. This technology allows for twenty-four hour coverage by specialists in the area of critical care medicine. Through a partnership with UMass Memorial Health Care in Worcester, Hallmark Health brought this advanced critical care software program to Melrose-Wakefield Hospital (MWH), which provides physicians and nurses with a constant feed of data on ICU patients. This allows for round-the-clock monitoring on patients’ blood pressure, oxygen saturation, heart rate, test results, nursing notes and other important information over secure transmission lines. This technology also supplies a method of consultation between the two hospitals and an extra level of expert care for MWH’s most critical patients.

There are many variables to consider in establishing safe, efficiently staffed hospital units. Patient care units differ based upon the types of patients cared for on a given unit, and the way in which care is organized and delivered there. Education and experience levels of unit staff, support from nurse educators and nurse managers also factor into unit staffing decisions, as does the unique characteristics and mission of each hospital. It is also important to look at patient outcomes (including fall rates, pressure ulcer rates, and Hospital Compare measures related to heart attack care, heart failure care, pneumonia care and surgical care) in the Performance Measures section of PatientCareLink.
