When unit census is low or even one, two licensed nurses must be on duty. When unit is closed, one RN must be on duty - she may be doing administrative work or she may be floated elsewhere. Unable to carve out orientation hours, preceptor hours, council work, educator hours, transporting patient time, emergency response calls (e.g. Code Blue, Code White), inservices and other training time. Unit based educator hours are also included in working hours. Staff also responsible for: insertion of catheters for VCUGs in xray; sedation and monitoring of MRI and CT scans; care of outpatients requiring IM or IV antibiotics or other injections, insertion of NG tubes and catheters for specimen collection or applying uring bag for specimen collection.
