Unit Information: |
Martha's Vineyard Hospital has a wide seasonal variation in the ED census, winter months see 30-35 patients per day while July and August range 80-90 patients per day. In the summer months and shoulder season staffing is augmented to accomodate this volume change. A Fast Track is offered 12 horus a day during the high season and is staffed with a PA, RN and unlicensed assistant. The RN staff is augmented with additonal RNs and unlicensed assitive personnel, during the same time frame additional administrative support is added to the ED registration area including a dedicated patient greeter. Behavorial health counselors are on call 24/7. AT & T interpreter services are used for interpretaton. Secretarial support is scheduled form 6 am to 2am daily. 1:1 observaion is accomodated by floating personnel or calling in additonal staff. |

There are many variables to consider in establishing safe, efficiently staffed hospital units. Patient care units differ based upon the types
of patients cared for on a given unit, and the way in which care is organized and delivered there. Education and experience levels of unit
staff, support from nurse educators and nurse managers also factor into unit staffing decisions, as does the unique characteristics and mission of each
hospital. It is also important to look at patient outcomes (including fall rates, pressure ulcer rates, and Hospital Compare measures related
to heart attack care, heart failure care, pneumonia care and surgical care) in the Performance Measures section of PatientCareLink.
