| Additional Unit Information: |
| Martha's Vineyard Hospital is a critical access hosptial, the ICU has a variable patient census, when the department is closed the nursing staff are placed on call or floated to another department as needed. The staffing pattern is based on a 1-2 patient to RN ratio but is adjusted based on acuity and census.
There are many variables to consider in establishing safe, efficiently staffed units. Patient care units differ based on the types of patients cared for on a given unit, and the way in which care is organized and delivered. Educaation and experience levels of staff, support from nurse educators and nurse managers also factors into unit staffing decisions as does the unique characteristics and missions of each hospital. It is also important to look at patient outcomes (including fall rates, pressure ulcer rates, and Hospital Compare measures related to heart attack care, heart failure rate, pneumonia and surgical care. |

| Respiratory therapy and Pharmacists are in the hosptial during the day shft and available on call off-shift. There is a provider on the inpatient unit for the day shift and part of the evening shift, the Emergency Department has a physician on duty 24/7 and respond to any emergencies when the Hospitalist is present. |
