Additional Unit Information:
Martha's Vineyard Hosptial has a wide seasonal variation in the ED census, winter months see 30-35 patients per day while July and August range 80-90 patients per day. In the summer and shoulder season staffing is augmented to accomodate this volume change. A Fast Track is offered 12 hours per day during the high season and is staffed with a PA, RN and unlicensed assistant. The RN staff is augmented with additional RNs and unlicensed assistive personnel. ED registration including a dedicated patient greeter are also added for the high season. Behavioral health counselors are on call 24/7, A T & T Interpreter services are availale 24/7, and additional staff are called in for 1:1 observation when needed. There are many variables to consider in establishing safe, efficiently staffed units. Patient care units differ based on the types of patients cared for on a given unit, and the way in which care is organized and delivered. Educaation and experience levels of staff, support from nurse educators and nurse managers also factors into unit staffing decisions as does the unique characteristics and missions of each hospital. It is also important to look at patient outcomes (including fall rates, pressure ulcer rates, and Hospital Compare measures related to heart attack care, heart failure rate, pneumonia and surgical care.
