Additional Unit Information:
2 West is the inpatient oncology unit. We provide both po and IV chemotherapy onsite. The pharmacists are competent in compounding the chemotherapeutic agents onsite. We also have a collaborative agreement with MGH and they provide onsite medical oncologist coverage 4 days per week. The RN staff are Biochemo certified assuring that they are competent to administer chemotherapeutic agents. We also have a oncology clinical specialist who oversees the chemotherapy program including collaborating with the medical oncologist's. The patient acuity has increased in the past year and the Quadramed nursing acuity tool indicated and increase in Nursing workload. Due to these changes the HPPD has been increased from 8.4 to 8.8 this year.

Other Team Members:
We also have unit service aides on the nursing units who assist in stocking patient rooms, patient transport and errands. The staff also have access to a clinical pharmacist 24/7.

There are many variables to consider in establishing safe, efficiently staffed hospital units. Patient care units differ based upon the types of patients cared for on a given unit, and the way in which care is organized and delivered there. Education and experience levels of unit staff, support from nurse educators and nurse managers also factor into unit staffing decisions, as does the unique characteristics and mission of each hospital. It is also important to look at patient outcomes (including fall rates, pressure ulcer rates, and Hospital Compare measures related to heart attack care, heart failure care, pneumonia care and surgical care) in the Performance Measures section of PatientCareLink.
