Additional Unit Information:
Martha's Vineyard Hospital is a critical access hospital, the ICU has a variable census, when the department is closed the nursing staff are placed on call or floated to another department as needed. The staffing pattern is based on a 1-2 patient to RN ratio. There are many variables to consider in establishing safe, efficiently staffed units. Patient care units differ based on the types of patients cared for on a given unit and the way in which care is organized and delivered. The educational level and experience of staff members along with support from managers also factor into unit staffing decisions as does the unique characteristics and missions of each hospital. It is also important to look at patient outcomes including patient fall rates, pressure ulcer rate, and Hospital Compare measures related to heart attack care, heart failure rate, pneumonia and surgical care.

Other Team Members:
Respiratory Therapy and Pharmacists are in the hospital during the day shift and available on call during off-shift hours. There is a provider on the inpatient units during the day and part of the evening shift. The Emergency Department has a physician on duty 24/7 and responds to any emergencies when the hospitalist is not present.
