Additional Unit Information: |
There are many variables to consider in establishing safe, efficiently staffed hospital units. Patient care units differ based upon the types of patients cared for on a given unit, and the way in which care is organized and delivered there. Education and experience levels of unit staff, support from nurse educators and nurse managers also factor into unit staffing decisions, as does the unique characteristics and mission of each hospital. |

Other Team Members: |
Martha's Vineyard Hospital is a critical access hospital; the inpatient unit is a mixed unit comprised of primarily geriatric patients. The medical-surgical beds can be used as skilled nursing beds for patients requiring rehabilitative services such as physical therapy, occupational and speech therapy. Staffing is adjusted daily per patient volume and acuity, in those cases where 1:1 for safety is indicated additional staff are called in or float personnel are used if available. There are many variables to consider in establishing safe, efficient staffed units. Patient care units differ based on the types of patients cared for on a given unit along with the way in which care is organized and delivered. The educational level and experience of staff, support from nursing supervisors and managers also factors into unit staffing decisions as does the unique characteristics and missions of each hospital. It is important to look at patient outcomes including fall rates, pressure ulcer rates, and Hospital Compare measures related to heart attack, heart failure pneumonia and surgical care.
Respiratory Therapy and Pharmacists are available during the day shift and on-call off-shift. Pharmacy is covered by a remote Pharmacist for order verification. There is a provider in the department on the day shift and part of the evening shift. The Emergency Department has an MD 24/7 who is responsible for covering emergencies until the Hospitalist can assume care.
There is also an RN assigned to medication teaching 4 hours per day |
