Two medical-surgical units have 25 beds each - the nursing staff is scheduled to either unit based on patient needs, acuity of the patients, as well as the nurses skill, experience and other assignments. The combined unit has has 24 telemetry monitors with ECG and pulse oximetry capability. We have an 11-bed overflow unit which is used for medical-surgical patients on an as needed basis.

Other Team Members:
Clinical Coordinator on duty 3P-7A weekdays and 24 hours on weekends and holidays. Ward secretary works 12 hour shift 7A-7P 7 days/week on each unit. Data Collector/QA Activity is 8 hours/week. Orientation/education is 32 hours/week. Patient Observation is allotted 80 hours/week for both units on all shifts.

There are many variables to consider in establishing safe, efficiently staffed hospital units. Patient care units differ based upon the types of patients cared for on a given unit, and the way in which care is organized and delivered there. Education and experience levels of unit staff, support from nurse educators and nurse managers also factor into unit staffing decisions, as does the unique characteristics and mission of each hospital. It is also important to look at patient outcomes (including fall rates, pressure ulcer rates, and Hospital Compare measures related to heart attack care, heart failure care, pneumonia care and surgical care) in the Performance Measures section of PatientCareLink.
