Unit Information: |
The Emergency Department Observation Unit has twelve new observations rooms with associated support areas in two separate suites across the hall from one another. On June 3, 2019,the first 6 beds were opened with intent to open the other 6 beds at a future date. The Emergency Observation Unit design goals are to support inpatient/admit to observation (ATO) growth at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital by expediting, facilitating and regionalizing the care of ATO patients who are currently admitted to General Medicine Service (GMS) throughout the 6th and 7th floors at BWFH. We will enhance continuity of care by keeping patients under the Emergency Medicine clinical care team for the duration of their hospital stay to improve throughput and decrease length of stay of ATO patients as well as increasing the number of acute care beds available for GMS patients. |

There are many variables to consider in establishing safe, efficiently staffed hospital units. Patient care units differ based upon the types
of patients cared for on a given unit, and the way in which care is organized and delivered there. Education and experience levels of unit
staff, support from nurse educators and nurse managers also factor into unit staffing decisions, as does the unique characteristics and mission of each
hospital. It is also important to look at patient outcomes (including fall rates, pressure ulcer rates, and Hospital Compare measures related
to heart attack care, heart failure care, pneumonia care and surgical care) in the Performance Measures section of PatientCareLink.
