Martha's Vineyard Hospital - Inpatient

Please note: MHA and our member hospitals are committed to delivering the most reliable, transparent data on staffing. Due to the extreme and unprecedented challenges that hospitals are facing through the COVID-19 pandemic, it is not possible to accurately capture staffing data representative of 2020 and 2021. Other healthcare authorities across the country have also suspended data collection over the course of the pandemic, including the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). We look forward to resuming regular public posting of staffing plans and data in 2022 and 2023, should circumstances permit.

We welcome any questions about staffing data, which can be directed to Pat Noga, MHA's Vice President of Clinical Affairs at pnoga@mhalink.org.

Additional Unit Information:
Martha's Vineyard Hospital is a critical access hospital; the inpatient unit is a mixed unit comprised of primarily geriatric patients. The medical-surgical beds can be used as skilled nursing beds for patients requiring rehabilitative services such as physical therapy, occupational and speech therapy. Staffing is adjusted daily per patient volume and acuity, in those cases where 1:1 for safety is indicated additional staff are called in or float personnel are used if available.

Other Team Members:
Respiratory Therapy and Pharmacists are available during the day shift and on-call off-shift. Pharmacy is covered by a remote Pharmacist for order verification. There is a provider in the department on the day shift and part of the evening shift. The Emergency Department has an MD 24/7 who is responsible for covering emergencies until the Hospitalist can assume care. There is also an RN assigned to medication teaching 4 hours per day

There are many variables to consider in establishing safe, efficiently staffed hospital units. Patient care units differ based upon the types of patients cared for on a given unit, and the way in which care is organized and delivered there. Education and experience levels of unit staff, support from nurse educators and nurse managers also factor into unit staffing decisions, as does the unique characteristics and mission of each hospital. It is also important to look at patient outcomes (including fall rates, pressure ulcer rates, and Hospital Compare measures related to heart attack care, heart failure care, pneumonia care and surgical care) in the Performance Measures section of PatientCareLink.
