Additional Unit Information: |
West 1 is a 16 bed, locked, DPH and DMH licensed unit which specializes in the care of adult geriatric patients who require a secure setting. Patients admitted to West 1 have a psychiatric diagnosis which meets the admission criteria for assessment evaluation, treatment and disposition planning for an acute inpatient stay. This inpatient unit provides treatment for psychiatric diagnoses including major depression, bi-polar illness, schizophrenia, personality disorders, psychotic episodes related to the diagnosis of dementia and delirium, pain anxiety/disorders, substance abuse and sleep disorders of the elderly. In addition, this medical-psychiatric unit specializes in differentially diagnosing related medical conditions from psychiatric conditions. The ability to treat both conditions concurrently makes this inpatient unit unique. |

There are many variables to consider in establishing safe, efficiently staffed hospital units. Patient care units differ based upon the types
of patients cared for on a given unit, and the way in which care is organized and delivered there. Education and experience levels of unit
staff, support from nurse educators and nurse managers also factor into unit staffing decisions, as does the unique characteristics and mission of each
hospital. It is also important to look at patient outcomes (including fall rates, pressure ulcer rates, and Hospital Compare measures related
to heart attack care, heart failure care, pneumonia care and surgical care) in the Performance Measures section of PatientCareLink.
