Additional Unit Information: |
Martha's Vineyard Hospital is a critical access hospital, the inpatient unit is a mixed unit comprised of primarily geriatric patients. The medical-surgical beds can be used as skilled nursing beds for patients requiring inpatient rehabilitative services; physical therapy, occupatinal and speech therapy is available during the day shift. Staffing is adjusted daily based on the acuity of the patients, age and mental status. Staffing is supplemented when needed as in the case of patients requiring 1:1 observation or pediatric patients. Respiratory therapy is in house during the day shift and on call for the evening and night shift. There are many variables to consider in establishing safe, efficiently staffed units. Patient care units differ based upon the types of pateints cared for on a given unit, and the way in which care is organized and delivered. Education and experience levels of unit staff, support from nurse educators and nurse mangers also factors into unit staffing decisions as does the unique characteristics and missions of each hospital. It is also important to look at patient outcomes (including fall rates, pressure ulcer rates, and Hospital Compare measures related to heart attack care, heart failure rate, pneumonia and surgical care). |
